My Fragile X Man came in from the bus with a gigantic smile on his face this afternoon. (I also LOVE when this happens!) Anyway, I asked him, "Joshy, did you have a happy day?" He grinned at me and answered, "The same ALL days! Always havin' happy days, Mama." Hooray!!! That's enough to make any Mama bubble up with joy. But today he seemed even happier than normal, so I asked a few more questions. "Joshy, you seemed REALLY happy when you got off of the bus. Was there something that made you super happy today?" He just beamed. "Yep," he replied. "I knowed how to do homework all byed my own self!" I love that he is feeling more and more empowered by his own ability to learn. He is actually feeling smart and able. I am more and more convinced that the SLIC program was the best thing we ever did for him.
I ushered him to the restroom to wash his grubby little mitts (cue the Birthday song), gave him an apple and sent him to the homework table. I always, always sit with him and help him with homework. It helps him and I get to hangout with him. It's a win-win for both of us. But today he insisted that he wanted to do it "all byed his own self" so I let him. He worked and worked! He was so focused. I asked him multiple times (enough times, in fact, that he started to get frustrated) if he needed me, and he kept saying "No anks, Mama!"
About an hour after he started with his homework, he brought in his work so I could look it over. He was bouncing and smiley and so excited that he did his homework alone. Here is what he did.
This is what a math boy sees when he looks at ANY worksheet. It's all about the numbers! And you know what...today he made me PROUD! I complimented his hard work, then excused myself to the restroom where I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD!!! 11encils, 1alendar, 1issue, 1lue, 8ooks, 1ug, 1ackpack and 5arkers. Just because I may see something one way, doesn't mean that seeing the same thing in a different way makes it wrong. So, GO JOSHUA!!! What a big boy to do your homework "all byed your own self." I am proud of you!
This is great, what a great mom you are! I would have been proud as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Angela! You are so kind and I really was proud!
DeleteThat is awesome! Every child learns and does things in their own way and this is just how Joshua chooses to do things. Nothing wrong with that! You and D'el are awesome parents to this amazing little man you have!
ReplyDeleteWow. Thank you! That is a huge compliment. It definitely is an adventure every single day!
